Thirteen nonpartisan organizations across Indiana’s U.S. Congressional District 6 came together because we believe voters deserve a fair opportunity to hear directly from the candidates seeking to represent them in Congress. Participating groups included League of Women Voters chapters in Brown/Bartholomew, Wayne, Henry, Hancock, Johnson, and Marion counties; NAACP units in Richmond, Bartholomew-Columbus, and Greater Indianapolis; Indivisible Wayne County and Central Indiana; South INDY-visible; and the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Columbus.

Our goal was simple: make the forum accessible to as many voters as possible through
a central location, live-streaming, and county watch parties for those who could not attend in person.

Both candidates were asked to provide two available dates by July 31 so volunteers could secure a venue, arrange live-streaming, coordinate watch parties, and let the public know well in advance.

Cinde Wirth’s campaign responded with the requested information. Jefferson Shreve’s campaign did not respond, despite receiving the invitation by certified mail and hand delivery to both his Greenfield and Richmond offices.

We are disappointed to share that, under the nonpartisan bylaws of both the League of Women Voters and the NAACP, at least two candidates must participate. As a result, the forum must be canceled.

We encourage voters to continue learning about the candidates on their ballot at
VOTE411.org, the League of Women Voters’ online voters’ guide. There, candidates are invited to share information about their campaigns and answer questions important to voters.

Call your Senator now at (202) 224-3121 and ask them to co-sponsor S. 4814 to prevent mass detention and deportation of Haitian families.

The facts have not changed. Haiti remains unsafe. Haitian TPS holders are our neighbors, essential workers, business owners, parents, and faith leaders. They contribute an estimated $5.9 billion annually to the U.S. economy, pay taxes, and fill critical workforce shortages in healthcare, construction, hospitality, caregiving, and other essential industries. Ending TPS will not only separate families, it will also harm employers, local economies, and communities across the country.

Congress has the power to act. Earlier this year, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the bipartisan H.R. 1689, which would extend Temporary Protected Status for Haitians. In the Senate, S. 4814, introduced by Senator Ed Markey and colleagues, authors legislation that would extend TPS for three years for Haitians.

We are told that politics happens in Washington. We are told that change comes from voting every two years and then waiting patiently.

But that is a lie.

Real politics, the kind that actually improves our quality of life, happens on our blocks, in our grocery stores, at our school board meetings, and around our kitchen tables. If we want a world that prioritizes people over profits, we cannot wait for the ruling class to save us. We have to build that world ourselves, right now, in the cracks of the old one.

1. Start a “Buy Nothing” Group (But Make It Political)

You may have heard of Buy Nothing groups on Facebook. They are great for getting rid of old furniture. But let’s take it further.

Instead of just giving away your old winter coat, use these groups to build a community inventory. Post an offer not just for stuff, but for skills. “I can fix your bike chain.” “I can watch your kid for two hours so you can go to a job interview.” “I can help you file for rental assistance.”

This matters because it decouples our survival from the capitalist marketplace. When we share resources, we weaken the grip of scarcity. We remind ourselves that we have everything we need if we just share it equitably.

2. Adopt a “Radical Reading” Group (With a Local Focus)

Form a “Current Events Council” with 3 to 5 neighbors. Once a week, read your local newspaper (not the national cable news). Look at the city budget. Look at who is running for zoning board. Look at which landlords are getting tax breaks.

Then, ask the hard questions: Who benefits from this decision? Who gets hurt? How can we show up to the next city council meeting to disrupt this?

Education isn’t just about knowing the facts; it’s about knowing who to call and when to show up.

3. The “Neighbor Check-In” Route

During the pandemic, we learned that the government wasn’t coming to save us. It was the neighbors who brought groceries to the elderly and checked on the immunocompromised.

Make this permanent. Pick a Saturday. Walk your block. Knock on doors (or leave flyers) that say: “We are your neighbors. If you need help shoveling snow, carrying trash, or just need someone to talk to, here is my number. If you have skills to offer, reply back.”

This isn’t charity. Charity is top-down. This is mutual aid. It is horizontal. It recognizes that we are all vulnerable and all capable. When Mrs. Johnson down the street knows she can call you when her Social Security check is late, you have just created a safety net that the state refuses to provide.

4. Show Up to the “Boring” Meetings

I know. City council meetings are dry. Zoning hearings are sleep-inducing. School board meetings can be filled with hysterical culture-war soundbites.

But here is the secret: That is where the money goes.

Developers show up to those meetings. Landlords show up. Corporate lobbyists show up. They sit in those hard plastic chairs because they know that decisions about affordable housing, school funding, and police budgets are made in those rooms.

We need to outnumber them. We don’t need to be policy experts; we need to be bodies. We need to be the people who stand up during public comment and say, “I live here, and I don’t want another luxury condo. I want a community land trust.”

5. Create a “Community Fridge” or Free Pantry

This is one of the most visible and beautiful forms of leftist action. Find a local business or a neighbor with a covered porch. Put a stocked fridge or a wooden box out front. Paint it: “Take what you need, leave what you can.”

Stock it with fresh produce, diapers, menstrual products, and canned goods. This is a direct challenge to food insecurity, which is a policy choice, not an inevitability. It also creates a “third space”; a place where neighbors run into each other, talk, and organize.

The Bottom Line: We Are The Government

The leftist viewpoint isn’t about waiting for a savior. It’s about recognizing that the system is designed to isolate us so we don’t realize our collective power.

Getting active isn’t about burning yourself out with performative activism. It’s about showing up consistently, locally, and with love.

Pick one thing from this list. Do it this week. Don’t worry about doing it perfectly. Just start.

Because when we organize, we shift the power. When we educate ourselves on local issues, we strip the veil off of corruption. And when we help our neighbors, we prove that another world isn’t just possible; it’s already beginning.

But what does that really mean? Are you entitled to certain rights or benefits from the government?

The short answer: Yes.

The date was Dec 16, 1773. A bunch of angry colonists got together and hurled the King’s tea into the sea to make a statement: No taxation without representation. Since then, the battle has raged on (rhetorically) about how and when taxes should be collected and spent. America, with its capitalist economy, has promoted rugged individualism. The American Dream is all about making a name for yourself and living a good life in the face of adversity. But what if I told you this push toward rugged individualism was all a lie?

Rugged Individualism For Thee, Socialism For Me

Let’s take a look at just one person: Elon Musk. Musk’s SpaceX company, as of 2025, has gathered more than $38 billion in government subsidies. Where did this money come from? That’s right, you and me, the average taxpayer. I am an avid space-enjoyer, and I think rockets and satellites are pretty cool, but why do we need to subsidize the richest man in the world, worth nearly $1 trillion? Why can’t he pay for the company out of his own coffers? I personally don’t want to give Musk any of my tax dollars. To make the situation even worse, Musk and his DOGE team spent 2025 slashing funding for programs that support average Americans everywhere.

So What Are We Owed?

The economy isn’t doing great right now. The cost of living and inflation are up, while wages and the job market stagnate. If the richest man in the world thinks he needs our money to continue operations, then imagine what the poorest Americans feel like. America is the only industrialized nation that does not offer universal healthcare. While we send weapons to Israel and fund their genocidal wars, their citizens are able to get free healthcare. It doesn’t seem fair or just, does it?

Taxes are a patriotic duty to fund the betterment of my community and society at large. Right now, I am not reaping those benefits. Here in Wayne County Indiana, we have crumbling roads and infrastructure, while our governor has deemed it necessary to get a landing pad for his helicopter, and he wants to turn I-70 into a toll road. How does any of that benefit the average person?

We are owed a livable wage. We are owed affordable housing. We are owed education and healthcare. It’s time to demand more from our leaders. They are supposed to be representatives, not rulers.

Held at Jack Elstro Plaza, the event brought together local residents, organizers, and first-time protesters alike. Attendees held signs, exchanged conversations, and listened to speakers, creating an atmosphere that was both energized and reflective.

While the motivations for attending varied, a common thread ran through many of the voices present. As Joanna Swanger, a member of Wayne County Indivisible (WCI) Steering Committee put it “Showing up still matters.”

“I’ve been politically active since I was a child,” Lindsay Garner said. “I’ve been using TikTok to talk about these issues, but I felt called to bring that energy into my local community and be here in person.”

For others, that sense of responsibility was rooted in personal history.

“My father fought in World War II,” another attendee shared. “I think that means something. It’s why I feel like I have to stand up for what I believe in.”

Some participants also connected their presence at the protest to broader global concerns.

“I feel like it’s important to define where I stand in history,” one woman said. “I don’t support the genocide happening internationally.”

Organizers emphasized that the protest was not only about expressing frustration, but also about fostering connection and encouraging continued civic participation at the local level.

The “No Kings” message, echoed throughout the event, reflects a broader call to reject unchecked authority and reaffirm the role of everyday citizens in shaping their communities.

As the gathering concluded, many attendees lingered – talking, connecting, and reflecting on the shared experience.

For those who participated, the message was clear: even in moments of frustration or fatigue, the act of showing up remains a powerful statement in itself.
